Tips for an Outdoor Ceremony

Many couples fantasize of a wedding under a canopy of trees, breathing in the fresh air next to rolling hills while surrounded by those they cherish most. The feeling of freedom without being confined by walls or ceilings is a beautiful feeling.

There are a multitude of factors to consider when planning an outdoor wedding. The time of year and season will dictate the temperature range and chances of inclement weather.

Here are some things to consider:

Back Up Plan

When considering venues, consider choosing a venue that has a backup plan space. If there is a heatwave or freeze or any kind of inclement weather, an indoor space will be a lovely respite from the discomfort of the outdoors. When touring venues, ask the venue team how they go about last minute ceremony changes. Do they assist with flipping the room or is that your responsibility to orchestrate? How much of a notice do they need to switch the spaces? 3 hours before the ceremony starts? The morning of when you arrive?

Guest's Comfort

Consider providing guests with fans, umbrellas or a water station during warmer weather. Shawls or blankets are a great item to provide to guests during those winter months. These elements could make all the difference in the guests’ comfort level! You can also speak with your venue team about if they have fans and heaters for rent. If the venue does not have them for rent, do they have recommendations for a vendor that provides these services?

Insect Patrol

If your celebration is going to be near mosquito-attracting water or is an area known to attract bugs, consider incorporating natural deterrents to insects. Some nonchalant ways to incorporate deterrents into your big day are sprigs of rosemary, lavender, mint and thyme. If a large portion of your event will be held outside, you may want to think about citronella torches or candles. These can be seamlessly incorporated into your decor!

Select Sturdy Flowers

Lastly, consideration should be given to the types of flowers that can handle various temperatures. When booking your floral vendor, ask for their recommendations for the best flowers for an outdoor soiree. Selecting hardier blooms like roses and chrysanthemums stand up to the challenge better than more delicate blossoms. Another factor to consider when selecting florals is that certain flowers are particularly attractive to pests like baby’s breath and peonies.
