What Is a Bridesmaid Supposed to Do?

What Is a Bridesmaid Supposed to Do? You know who you want to stand beside you on your big day – your best friends. But are you a bit confused about what exactly a bridesmaid is supposed to do? If so, you’re not alone. Many brides, especially those that are the first of their friends to get married, have questions about what a bridesmaids’ duties should really entail. Well, we are here to help, with a few guidelines for how bridesmaids can help and celebrate you, leading up to your wedding!

To Help with Planning/Projects, and To Find the Perfect Wedding Dress

If you’re a DIY bride, or simply one hoping to tackle a few tasks firsthand, your bridesmaids’ help will likely prove invaluable. So don’t hesitate to call in assistance when it comes to most wedding-related tasks, from picking invites (ask a friend who loves stationery stores or crafting), to choosing flowers (ask someone with florist experience, or simply someone whose taste you admire).

You may also want to ask your best friend, sister or mom, to tag along when you go to check potential wedding venues, or to hire a photographer or caterer. While you should try to limit how many opinions you’re weighing, having at least one trusted love one with you when you make big decisions, can help minimize stress.

And when it comes to dress shopping, feel free to invite your whole crew or just a few people. Do what feels right to you. If you get overwhelmed with opinions, you might only ask your mom and sister. Love a good group shopping trip? Invite all your bridesmaids; they’ll be happy to be there with you.

For Your Bachelorette Whatever, and Any Bridal Showers

Whether you’re hoping to have an entire girls getaway weekend, or a simple night out on in your hometown (or at home with RomComs) this is one of the events your bridesmaids should really be throwing for you.

In most cases, designating one or two people to plan the party or trip is the best bet. Ideally this would include your maid-of-honor, and one other friend that is a great party planner, or lives in the area where you’ll be celebrating.

In most cases, you should only need to block out time for the celebration, and provide a list of guests, complete with addresses and phone numbers.

Your bridesmaids may also want to host a bridal shower in your honor, though you may have family offer to do this instead. Either way, you should be able to count on most of your bridesmaids to accompany you to these events, as well, so long as they’re within a reasonable travel distance. And if you’re having two or three showers, it’s courteous to invite them to the one closest to them.
