Planning the Perfect Proposal: Part One

Getting the Proposal Right With Tips from TOTToday we’d like to speak to the gentlemen out there, namely those of you with hopes to propose soon.
If you already have a ring box burning a hole in your coat pocket, we will be talking to you tomorrow about planning the perfect proposal. But for those of you who have yet to brave the jewelry store, today is all about you, and how to go about first finding a ring that will reflect your girlfriend’s great style, and also show the world just how much you love her! A perfect proposal, after all, starts with the right ring; here are some tips on how to make sure you find “the one.”

Make Sure the Ring Fits Her

If you’re fortunate enough to have been gifted an heirloom piece, the hardest part of your job may already be done. But, make sure to have that one-of-a-kind ring sized to fit your girlfriend. And, if you no longer have the original box (or if it’s old in a non-glamorous way) ask the store for a beautiful one to house the most important jewelry she’ll ever wear. After all, opening any gift is half the fun!

If that antique ring is somewhat plain, or not your love’s style, consider having it reworked to better reflect her taste (with your grandmother or mother’s blessing, of course). This can be done by adding some stones to an existing setting, or by salvaging the diamond from an outdated setting and having it placed in a new one that better suits your soon-to-be-fiance’s personality.

Not Sure Where to Start?

For those of you ring shopping, from scratch, take a deep breath. It doesn’t have to be super stressful if you go in knowing what you’re looking for, and how much you’re able to spend. Keep in mind that most girlfriends don’t want their boyfriends to blow a year’s salary to buy a dream ring. They just want to feel understood and appreciated, and reflected in the purchase.

Obviously the best way to know exactly what she would want is to ask her. But, if you want to maintain the element of surprise, you will need a little outside help. Consider talking to her mother, sister or best friend.

Think about who she talks to most, or who she loves to shop with. This is going to be your best resource when trying to determine what style of ring she would prefer. You can also check your girlfriend’s Pinterest, if you’re feeling extra sneaky. Chances are she may have saved either engagement rings or other jewelry that could be great clues as to what she loves (gold vs. white gold, round or square cut, etc.).

Remember, many guys assume a bigger diamond is always better, but really the most important thing you can do is select a ring that mirrors your girlfriend’s taste and unique style, and one that will look beautiful on her finger. If she’s not into big, blingy jewelry, she may not want a giant rock to weigh down her hand. She may prefer something more understated, with a gentle, romantic vibe. Try to choose a ring that looks like something she would choose to wear, and hopefully she will, everyday for the rest of your lives!

Tomorrow we will be back to share some helpful tips on how to actually get engaged, which is such a special occasion for any couple!
